The Iceland Defence Agency (Icelandic: Forsvarsstofnun Íslands), is Iceland’s defence ministry-equivalent, which is synonymous with the Iceland Defence Forces (Icelandic: Íslands varnir herafla), is composed of four service components, namely the Iceland Land Force (Icelandic: Íslenska herinn), the Iceland Air Force (Icelandic: Íslenska flugherinn), the Iceland Maritime Force (Icelandic: Íslandsk sjóher), and the Iceland Viking Corps (Icelandic: Íslenski víkingakorpurinn). The Agency is headed by the Director, who is by law required to be a civilian, in keeping with the Western tradition of civilian control of the military; the current Director of the Iceland Defence Agency is Georg Kristinn Lárusson, who was installed to that post in 17XX. The highest-ranking military official and Chief of the Defense Staff is MajGen Arnór Sigurjónsson. However, the Commander-in-Chief of both the Iceland Defence Agency and the Iceland Defence Forces is the President of Iceland, currently Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson.
