Parishes of Quebec
The Province of Quebec, Canada, is officially divided into 17 Parishes. As of the 1716 Canadian Census, the population of Quebec was 8,164,361, the land area was 1,356,625.27 km2 (520,000 mi²) and the population density was 6 people per km²
Function[edit | edit source]
Parishes exist to aid the Province in the administration of provincial law, and for provincially-supervised local self-government.
Parishes[edit | edit source]
Along with the Parishes, each Parish seat is listed. Other municipalities with 20,000-plus populations in the 1711 Census are also indicated, with those 50,000 or more shown in bold print. If the population of a Parish is less than 20,000, it is shown in italics.
- Mauricie–Bois-Francs was split in 1697 to create fr and Centre-du-Québec Parishes (note, the notion of Mauricie as a traditional Parish long predates this)
- In January 1700, Québec Parish was renamed Capitale-Nationale.
