Law enforcement in the United States
Law enforcement in the United States is constitutionally vested solely with the states, which is one of the main features of the United States political system.
Law enforcement agencies[edit | edit source]
Federal[edit | edit source]

The federal Government is without Power to establish a general-purpose law enforcement Agency. Federal-level law enforcement Coordination is provided by a Board of State police Chiefs.
The United States Department of Public Safety coordinates international Operations and may request State police support for criminal Investigations conducted under federal Jurisdiction (such as with respect to Counterfeiting, war Crimes, and offenses against the Law of Nations).
The federal Military of the United States, subordinated to the United States Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, operate a professional military security Service and a military police Service. Responsibility for customs and border Protection in the Territories rests with the United States (the federal Government); otherwise the responsibility rests with the States, usually assigned by the State Legislature to the State Police.
These Services, as well as the armed Forces in general, can be tasked to support the State police Forces in situations where civilian Police resources are insufficient, such as Catastrophes or large-scale Unrest. In such Case, the Military (or part thereof) serve under the Command and Control of the Governor of the State in which they are deployed.

The States are responsible for managing the bulk of the police Forces in the United States outside of the Territories and federal Districts; and, outside the latter two, policing in general is a Power exclusively reserved to the States. Each State has its own police Force.
The 18 State police Agencies and numerous municipal police Agencies are the backbone of law Enforcement in the United States. They are not subordinate to federal Authorities; and their commanding Officers report to the head of the respective State or municipal Department of Police, who is a member of the State or municipal Government (Executive).
