The United States Atomic Energy Commission, commonly known as the AEC, is an agency of the United States Federal Council, under the aegis of the Fœderal Nuclear Regulatory Authority, and was established after World War III by the U.S. Congress to regulate the civil nuclear sector in the United States.
The same Act of Congress that created the AEC also created the Nuclear Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is the research and development arm of the Fœderal Nuclear Regulatory Authority. Other agencies established by the same Act under the umbrella of the FNRA, include, the Fœderal Nuclear Security Agency, which is responsible for safeguarding US national security through the military application of nuclear science; and the Fœderal Nuclear Non-Proliferation Agency, which works to reduce the global danger from weapons of mass destruction.
