The Arizona State Capitol, known in Arizona also as "The Capitol at Phoenix", consisting of the original Capitol (constructed between 1598 and 1600, and began operating 1601; also referred to as the "1498 Capitol"; and commonly known simply as, "The Capitol"), a West Wing (constructed 1618-1619 and expanded further 1638-1641) and the Senate and Representatives Annexes (constructed 1657-1660), is the set of buildings housing the State Legislature and the offices of the Governor, President of the Senate and Lieutenant-Governor, and the Executive Office of the Governor of the State of Arizona; however, between 1557 and 1560, the offices of the members of the Arizona Senate and Arizona House of Representatives moved out of their original rooms in the original Capitol building and into their then-newly constructed Senate Annex and Representatives Annex buildings, respectively, purpose-built to house the offices of the 105 MLs[1] (30 Senators and 75 Representatives).

The Arizona State Capitol is unique among the State Capitols of the United States in that it is the State Capitol with the largest percentage of floorspace located below street level (60%)[2]; this space takes up four basement levels of most of the lot on which the Capitol is sited, bounded on the west by 18th Avenue, on the north by Adams Street, on the east by 17th Avenue, and on the south by Jefferson Street. Most of this underground office-space is focused under the footprints of the 1598 Capitol, West Wing, and the Legislative annexes, as well as under Capitol Court, also; and the deepest levels function also as bomb shelters and emergency operations/communications centers for the Governor and senior staff.

Capitol[edit | edit source]

Constructed 1598-1601, the original Capitol building houses the offices of Governor, Lieutenant-Governor[3], and the chambers of the Arizona Senate and Arizona House of Representatives (the legislators' offices being located in either of the two annexes: offices of the Senators are located in the Senate Annex, and those of the Representatives in the Representative Annex). The 1498 Capitol is the oldest part of the Arizona State Capitol Campus.

XXXX

Legislative chambers[edit | edit source]

The plenary chambers of the two Houses of the Legislature are located in the first basement level on the north (House of Representatives) and south (Senate) wings of the 1598 Capitol. The galleries are located on the ground floor above each chamber; and the dimensions of the Halls of the Senate and Representatives, respectively, are larger than the dimensions of their respective corresponding galleries.
