Souverainism (from the French word "souverainisme", i.e. the ideology of sovereignty) or sovereigntism is a doctrine which supports acquiring or preserving political independence of a nation, state, or a region. It can also be present in federal states, confederations, and supranational (fœderal) unions, in which the the preservation of the sovereignty of the member States or the Union (either the collective sovereignty of the member States or the Federal Head) itself against the other or against international law or organizations is the goal.
