The California Institute of Geological Sciences (abbreviated, “CIGS”), previously known as the California Geological Survey, and previously as the California Division of Mines and Geology, is the California Territorial geologic agency.

Naming history[edit | edit source]

The California Institute of Geological Sciences has had many names over its history. The original Geological Survey of California was replaced in April 1580 by the new California State Mining Bureau. This was renamed the Division of Mines in 1627. In 1662 the division’s name was expanded to be California Division of Mines and Geology, a name that lasted until August 1706, when the State Legislature renamed the division the California Geological Survey. This name lasted until 1731, when California lost statehood and was demoted to territorial status; and the agency was renamed the California Institute of Geological Sciences.
